USA v. Italy

My wife is my best friend. But she doesn't seem to get into soccer. She actually is so irreligious that she was reading email and looking at pictures during the first half. Looks like I might even be alone during the second half. Anyway, I am going to blog in order to vent (as true soccer afficionados do). I really don't care if any one reads this. But feed back is fun.

I have been frustrated by the cards in this tournament anyway. But the red card on Italy was deserved. The red on US was horrific. I think the look on the ref's face says it all. He knows he has blown it.

The US is playing well.

Unbelievable!

The Ref just carded Pope. I called Ben Wright in the first half and told him that I didn't like Pope. My exact statement -- Ben, be my witness -- was that Pope was going to be our side's achilles heel. I was right. But the call was unjust.

I'm soooo with you. I almost called you so that I could rant and rave because my oh so pious family kept reminding me it was "just a game"! How irksome when you are mad! I actually got up and left the game so as to maintain my sanctification, and watched from a distance as I worked on supper. Okay, I realize the US team is about the worst in the tournament, but that ref needs to be ousted once and for all. And, to find out that he had been ousted in 2002 for "irregularities"??? I think the man personally hated the US and couldn't stand that they were actually, shockingly, and unexpectedly holding their own!

Why did you dislike Pope?

So, what about the French goal that wasn't counted because the ref was blind?

I can confirm that Bob made that exact statement about 20 minutes in game time before the red card.

Come on guys, you have to keep up with the rule changes. Last World Cup there were some absolutely violent tackles from behind. The goals scored were so low and the play so rough that it made the game difficult to watch. The new rules have had the desired effect clean up the game and make it more offensive. Mastreoni's red card was deserved at any time in any game. Two footed tackle, spikes up, in his offensive third!! There was no defensive purpose for that play and he jeopardized the opposing player. It was a horrific tackle with no justification and well deserving of the card. Incidentally, the international press agrees with the referee. The Italy red card was definitely warranted. The Eddie Pope cards as well. The new rule is very clear, come in from the back and you will get a yellow card. It really cracks me up to hear about the "US epic" against Italy. Has the press failed to notice that they only have ONE SHOT ON GOAL in two games?!?!?!
