Spain v. Tunisia

Bravo, Spain! This team never ceases to amaze me. Maybe this is the year they will snap the spell and actually be on the World Cup stage what they actually have potential to be: winners! I'm sure my Spanish relatives are happy.

Donna, I didn't like Pope because I thought he was slow, sloppy, sluggish, over-rated, and seemed to display an irritating nonchalence. The yellow card might have been harsh, but he was just plain dumb to have made that kind of tackle when he already had a card.

I wonder if my cousins are so inflated with optimism that they actually think Spain will go all the way. I predict Spain will be in the last eight. No more. They can't go that long without choking.

What about France? Irritating. Barthez is too old, too slow, and too bald. It's true that they got a goal stolen from them. That was obvious. Everybody knows it now. FIFA is going to have to consider technology. But France needs to score. I think everybody is watching France just to see Zidane one last time. When most footballers refer to him as one of the top players of the century, it's fun to watch him - even when he's not doing anything. His wonder-working footwork is still there, though not as consistently or constant as in his earlier years, but he is getting old. With one of the world's greatest midfielders, France ought to do him a favor and providing some decent strikers.

That's my opinion. Now, where are the nachos?

By technology do you mean instant replays for the refs? That would stink! It wouldn't be football if the refs didn't have the last say. Besides it would take too long for the refs to look at these replays during the game. It would turn into American football--God forbid!

I wouldn't say inflated optimisim. Matthew was actually here today and we were able to watch the game together. Someone else to go crazy with me when Spain scores!! These are heady times for Spain fans. Let's just say that they are getting some breaks and they are fighting hard. Both of those are new to Spain. AUPA ESPANA!!!! (Can't figure out how to get the Spanish keyboard to work)

Bob,

Go Spain! Todays win was a character win.

I can't say that I feel sorry about your French pains. I still remember when the French fans began singing "Le Blues" (or whatever there song is) when Spain got knocked out in 1998. :-)

Clearly, while I am obeying the biblical injunction to rejoice with those who rejoice, my beloved cousin has chosen to ignore the injunction to weep with those who weep.

Oh, well. Since Spain has never won anything, I must be patient.

lizfuel,

Argentine purist. It's easy for you to say, "No technology." When your team scores (i.e. 6-0), they leave no room for doubt.

France needs every bit of help it can get.

The chips and salsa sound great.

Bob, when you say "chips" and salsa are you talking about technology (the "chips" that were to go in the balls to see if it goes over the line) or taste buds? After France's last game, I bet you would like some chips!

I do find it amusing that the ref was a Mexican. :-) Have to love the Mexican refs!

Wish I had a chance to see more games, because I can't really comment on how Spain and France did since I didn't see the matches.

Bob--thanks for the compliment. :)

I view soccer as art, and when you throw technology at art it just loses something. Well, I guess Argentine soccer is a work of art, anyway. :)

I'll be leaving work early tomorrow to see Argentina win again!

Donna, be careful of lumping me with my baby brother. I'm still trying to "bring him up in the way he should go." France got robbed with that goal, typical call from a Mexican ref! I will always root for Zidane (unless it's against Spain) but their team is horrible. It's so sad to see such one of the great player's ever end his career on such a pathetic note.

Donna, there is a 74% chance that Spain and France will face each other in the second round. That should be a very interesting matchup.
